A Prayer of Advent
Oh, Bethlehem where are you
city of promise; city of change
the darkness of the way keeps
your spires and turrets
far off and unfamiliar, unreachable
a road too far to travel;
the way too fraught with fear
Oh, Bethlehem what are you
in this age of despair and conceits
will you stay in the shadows
under dark starlit nights
or will you light your fires
and bring us to you where
we may warm ourselves and
and be made welcome
Oh, Bethlehem when will you draw
close to us opening your doors
of welcome and laying out
a feast of joy and happiness
within your walls of safety
will your inns be open
will your tables be spread
will your arms embrace
us all
Oh Bethlehem we are cold
and troubled; we are tired
and we are longing to
be done with the darkness
turn up your lights
and let them shine to
show us the way and
banish this darkness,
hunger and fear.
Amen
