The moon over the tallgrass prairie
caresses the shoulders of the land
like a secret lover who comes
every 28 days to touch the
virgin yet again in a
200 million-year-cycle
of love making and rebirthing;
of touching lightly
the breezes flowing across
the hairy skin
of the sleeping giant.
Awake! Awake!
it says, come to me
and let me touch you
and caress you softly
but for a night of
love. Think not of
the morning or the cares
of tomorrow for tonight
the tallgrass moon
makes love to the prairie;
the yet-again virgin prairie
under the tallgrass moon.
