Eyelids for Faith

If faith​​ had eye lids

If faith​​ had​​ eyelids

opening and closing;

blinking to keep the vision

clear; to keep the eyes of faith

moist and healthy,

would​​ faith care​​ about​​ 

the​​ color​​ of​​ 

liner​​ that​​ was used?

Would faith care about the length

of the lashes; the​​ color of the mascara?

If faith had eyelids would it use

them to dreamily close

just​​ a little​​ so​​ 

they would draw the

attention​​ of the​​ desired;

to seduce the unsuspecting

or the willing?

Or would they stay wide open

and let​​ others​​ peer​​ deep into the​​ 

back sides of those corneas;

deeper inside than any​​ other​​ place?

If faith had eye lids would it close them

to what it did not want to see or​​ 

would they stay open, ​​​​ bearing​​ 

witness to the pain and suffering;

and the joys?

Would they stay up​​ late

resisting sleep

until they saw all they could see?

If faith had eyelids,​​ 

Would they close tight​​ 

Against the blazing hot​​ 

truth of the sun?

Would they stay open under

water?

If faith had eye lids

would it be safe

from what it did

not want to see?
