So, how far did you walk?
You may ask how far I walked
and I will say
it was to the edge of tomorrow
out the backdoor of yesterday
to where the coyote howled in the evening light
birds that I could not name cooed in their nests
I walked past ancient beasts
far bigger and more powerful
than me but allowing my passage
as long as I gave more respect than attention
I walked to where the moon
could shine so bright
that I became a moon shadow;
a specter brushing ever
so lightly over the ground
I walked on and on into the darkness
to where the silence
was deafening and roared in my ears
drowning out noisy chatter
of past and future
leaving only my shuffling footsteps
on the consecrated ground
I walked to where the milky way
opennnnned up across the dark canopy of stars;
and on and on
to where the grasses grow deep into the soil
to where few have trod
more beating heart
than modern mind,
I walked to where I became
small;
