there had to be others
maybe several before
the final one, each one
turning away the future,
saying no to the Holy,
offering nothing but
a closed door, exasperated
at the requests for
shelter, for a warm place.
And now by birth and
citizenship, by privilege
and by place, I am
becoming those
first innkeepers,
saying no
no room
no place
no safety
go away
do not disturb
my place behind
these doors,
behind these walls
that keep me in
even as I keep
them out.
God help us
Lord forgive us
Mary intercede for us
Someone, please
stop us.
