Joy, having only three letters, is perfect
for marketing, fitting so easily on banners and posters
even Christmas light displays. It is a one-syllable
key to the good-life, a step beyond happy
almost out of reach for the common person
and, therefore, great for creating demand; growing
market share. Who doesn’t want to be the happiest
of happy, the gladdest of glad, over the top.
Being dangled ahead, just out of reach, joy
is seldom known or felt and yet
there are those moments when a good friend stops
to hug the air out of you, a child calls
to say they love you, a baby is born
and there it is, joy without the lights.
I guess that’s where the star came in.
